Criminal Minds

Frumos, nu-i asa? Hai sa ii compatimim in continuare…

For the English language readers: Google translation is not legible, so here’s my translation.

“Criminal Minds” is a TV show which has as main character a team of FBI profilers.; in every episode they recover a missing or kidnapped person or they catch a serial killer. And why am I writing about TV shows?

Because of the surprise I had when I’ve heard “I love you, puyule”. Tonight’s new episode was about a gypsy  family that was kidnapping little girls and killing their parents. Now, as you may have realized, the family was from Romania. But the screenplay author went further on and said “they are rromani, gypsies” and continued by telling about their lack of respect for the law, about their own traditions and nomadic way of life.

So, once again, Romanians are (still) associated with the gypsies and their crimes. Beautiful, isn’t it? Let’s pity them some more…

Cine-i compatimeste?

Could anyone possibly tell me what puyule means in english? I’m trying to learn romanian and i saw that episode and was just wondering about the meaning! Thanks<3

“Pui” means offspring. It’s a generic term for baby (even for animals): you can either say “calf” or “baby cow”, right? “Pui” is the “baby” in “baby cow”. “Puiule” means “[you] my little baby” (as you may have guessed, “puyule” is not the corect Romanian spelling)..

    @Klazina
The proper spelling is “Puiule” and it’s an endearment term. It comes from “pui” as in cub, chick, kid or young and it’s used for boys/young adults only. Sometimes it’s a substitute for the first name – spelled “Puiu” – used by friends and relatives even for grownups. For girls/women although less frequent, one might use “Puica”.

    To clarify some things:
    1) they never stated in the show that Romanians or Gypsies are criminals and didn’t imply that aspect either. the criminals happened to be of Romanian descent and had twisted a harmless tradition into something perverse.
    2) the family didn’t rape the girls. they kidnapped them to work them into their lifestyle and carry on their traditions.

I understand that as Romanians, you may feel offended, but they never said anything about Romanians being evil or inherently criminals. The show has plenty of white criminals, but that doesn’t mark the implication that every American is a rapist or a felon. The same goes for the other ethnicities of the various criminals. Asians, African-Americans, and Indians have all been a suspect in some way. The point of the show is to make it diverse because no one race is evil. These prejudices exist in society, but as far as the show goes, anyone can be a criminal despite race, gender, or age.

Romanians are associated with Gypsies because it’s part of your history. There is not fault to be found with anyone that Gypsies are connected with Romanians. And unfortunately, bad things are always more memorable than the good. But all of this talk of wanting to blame someone and “pitying” people for it is absurd and an excuse for needing a scapegoat for your misguided anger.

So all of you need to stop trying to find a reason to be angry at the show or at Americans because you’re misconstruing the entire show. If you haven’t watched more than just that episode of Criminal Minds, you should before you go off ranting about it.

  16. 16 ketheriusNo Gravatar Jul 24th, 2010 at 12:05

@Aster: It is not misguided anger. You should talk about it after you live a few months in a gipsy populated area. You should talk after you live the fear of answering your cellphone when you see a gipsy around. After you have experienced the happines of riding the public transit after 11 PM and not being mugged and/or gang raped; after you are pickpocketed every week on the same public transit line at the same hour by the same gipsy gang. Go live in Bulgaria, Romania, Hungary, Czech Republic, Slovakia etc.

Afterall, you have no idea how you feel like when you are Romanian on a job interview and you are asked about the gipsy gang that left a trail of robberies accross Canada from Quebec to Alberta, before some of them were arrested in Calgary. And, of course, the question was referring to the “Romanians” that commited the robberies. How would you feel like if, whereever you go, your nation will be identified only with the worst people it has produced?

Honestly, you have no moral authority to talk about misguided anger towards the gypsies.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romani_people

“Sometimes, rom and romani are spelled with a double r, i.e., rrom and rromani. In this case rr is used to represent the phoneme /ʀ/ (also written as ř and rh), which in some Romani dialects has remained different from the one written with a single r. The rr spelling is common particularly in Romania, in order to distinguish from the endonym for Romanians (sg. român, pl. români).[18]“
